Industries

Legacy software rescue patterns are different in every industry. We've written about three we see most often.

Legacy software rescue for three industries where the risk of doing nothing is highest: manufacturing, healthcare, and enterprise operations. The technologies vary; the pattern of neglect and the cost of ignoring it do not.

Manufacturing floors, hospital administrations, and enterprise back-offices all share a specific software problem: the systems that actually run the business were built between 1998 and 2012, on stacks the industry has since moved past, by developers who have left. The system is not new enough to be documented and not old enough to be replaced without significant risk. The visible signs are the same across all three sectors — slow recovery from crashes, one person who understands it, small changes breaking unrelated modules, growing "do not touch" areas, and a multi-year "we should rewrite this" conversation that has produced nothing.

We treat each industry with the same core process (assessment first, targeted repair or modernization second, replacement only when the assessment proves it necessary), but the constraints differ. Manufacturing lives and dies by shop-floor uptime. Healthcare adds HIPAA, validation, and accreditation risk on top of every code change. Enterprise operations run on internal LOB apps where business continuity is the primary constraint and downtime is measured in employee hours lost.
